North West MEP Complains Of Betrayal On Tune
A North West Euro-MP says that the death knell may have been sounded for the world's most valuable fish by the decision of some EU leaders to keep open the trade in blue fin tuna.
The governments of Mediterranean nations have teamed up to defeat British proposals that were backed by the European Commission to try and save the fish from extinction.
WWF, the Worldwide Fund for Nature, predicts that stocks of blue fin tuna, a prize ingredient in sushi, will have fallen below the level needed for recovery by 2012.
Chris Davies claims that efforts to introduce a trade ban were defeated when President Sarkozy surrendered to French fishing interests and reversed his previous position.
The Liberal Democrat MEP believes that the refusal of some EU governments to back curbs on fishing makes much-needed reform of the Common Fisheries Policy harder to achieve.
He said: "Conservationists will see President Sarkozy's decision as a betrayal. Everyone concerned for the future of our seas should be worried that the short term interests of fishermen have once again been put before the need to save fish stocks for the long term."
