Protecting Animals Is Not A Fluffy Issue
A North West Euro-MP is predicting that a partnership between Europe and the cosmetics industry will save animal lives.
The European Commission has announced this week that €25 million of public money is to be matched with €25 million from Colipa, the European Cosmetics Association, to fund research into alternatives to animal testing.
Liberal Democrat Chris Davies helped negotiate the current law on cosmetics that has already probibited the use of animals for many tests. He says that further research is essential to develop more alternatives to animal testing that can still ensure the protection of human health.
He said: "Europe has a very successful cosmetics industry and I am pleased that we are now working together to accelerate the work of replacing tests that cause suffering to laboratory animals.
"The days of rabbits having perfume squirted in their eyes are gone, and a range of non-animal tests have now been approved, but we have still to find effective alternatives for some that remain and are vital."
