Government must promote workers' law change
Changes in EU law on people working in other countries are needed
but will need the Government to apologise for past mistakes, a North
West Euro-MP has said.
Chris Davies said that recent strike action had highlighted that
local agreements on pay and conditions should not be undercut by
employing people from elsewhere in Europe.
But the Liberal Democrat warned that objections would be raised
by some EU countries because the British Government had led the
campaign to keep EU employment laws weak.
"Hundreds of thousands of British citizens are working elsewhere
within the European Union. They benefit from one of the EU's core
principles, the freedom we all have to live and work in any one
of the 27 member states," said Davies.
"Competition is good, but it is supposed to be on a level
playing field. If fair play is being prevented then the rules need
to be strengthened."
"Admitting past mistakes will be the first step towards winning
support for change from all our European neighbours."
